Taking the pulse of capitalism ... in 1932

This is the cover of a 1932 issue of Der wahre Jacob, a German satirical magazine linked to the Social Democratic Party.

Father Time, appearing as a physician, is taking the pulse of a stricken personification of Capitalism. The former says: "Get used to it. The sickness that you're suffering from is called old age."

Hitler was appointed chancellor exactly one year after this issue's date of publication. Der wahre Jacob, a well-known German phrase that is roughly equivalent to "the real McCoy," would be forced to close shortly thereafter.
